Gang Violence

  • Posted on March 26, 2009 at 11:58 am

Generally I don’t like to write about topics that are too sad or too depressing.  I like to keep this blog going on a positive note, but one topic that I feel needs to be discussed this week is the gang violence that has gotten out of hand.  Just the other day there was a violent murder that took place a few streets away from my work.  Everyone is assumming it was gang related.  It was a random act that occurred in an upper middle class neighborhood.

Besides that the information is pretty vague.  There were a couple of witnesses that saw a number of people and heard yelling but besides that nothing else has been said or heard.  The neighbors are in a state of shock.  I just hope these killers are found and the truth comes out.  If it is gang related that is horrible and we need to work on solving that problem, but if it is not the crime is still just as horrible and other problems need to be addressed.

Spring

I love the start of Spring.  I’m not one who loves staying home and staying inside.  So Spring is my favorite time of the year, because everyone gets out more and there are so many outside activities to do.  One thing I love to do is go to outdoor concerts.  Wolftrap is one of my favorite spots to go to for outdoor entertainment.  They have live bands and plays that run throughout the year.  But during the spring and summertime the conerts are on the lawn.  It’ s just down the road but when you go you really feel as though you are getting away for a night.  I love the start of Spring.

Painting the Bathroom

I love doing home projects.  I haven’t started my latest one yet but plan to do so tomorrow.  Just by chance my boss has given me the next two days off so I am going to use them to actually get some work done around the house.  I have decided to paint the bathroom red.  I am only going to do one wall to see how it goes and then possibly another one later.  I can’t wait to get started.  We have lived in this house for over 4 years now and I think it’s about time to do something to our bathroom!  Next will be the kitchen and then the family room, etc. the list of projects goes on and on.

Food Drive

The last blog I wrote was about a homeless shelter that I was visiting.  This one is about a great thing we are doing at work to help people out who don’t have as much food and money as we do.  We are having a contest in every department to see which department can collect the most cans of food.  So far our department is in third place.  The good news is overall the whole company has collected almost 2,000 cans of food to donate!  I think that is amazing.  Imagine every company doing the same thing.  We might be able to knock out hunger if everyone got together and donated one or two cans of food.  That’s it that is all it would take!  This type of thing gives me so much hope.

Facets

Tomorrow I am going to do something that I have wanted to do for a long time.  I’m going to visit a homeless shelter and meet the people who work and live there.  I have always wanted to work at or volunteer for a position with a homeless shelter.  Tomorrow after the tour Sara is going to tell me all about the volunteer opportunities available.

I figured now is the best time to start volunteering with the difficulties that families are having with their finances.  The shelter is at full capacity right now and they are in need of help.  Fairfax County has always been known as a rich community but with the increase in unemployment and the high interest rates affecting the housing market a lot of people are ending up in shelters.  I’m hoping I’ll be able to get a lot out of this experience and I hope I become more grateful for everything I have.
