Trick or Treat

  • Posted on October 31, 2009 at 4:59 pm

Every once in a while there is a burst of protests from people about celebrating Halloween. I understand their good intentions and their issues with embracing ideas contrary to their own religious beliefs. But in all reality, most kids don’t even think about wican and the origins of the celebrations. The kids just want to dress up in costumes and go collect free candy. The modern tradition may have evolved from more sinister beginnings. But that’s not what it is about for most of us anymore.

I say, let the kids have fun and collect their candy.

Spooky Treats

As parents, we are supposed to bake and take 2 dozen cookies or other treats for the children’s class party on Thursday. I’ve been scouring the internet for Halloween cookie recipes, and just can’t find much of interest.

meringueghosts

The best that I came across so far are these meringue ghosts. They are probably very easy to make and after you stick a couple of eyes and maybe even a mouth on them, you have some really cute ghosts.

Fairies Among Us

There are a lot of fairy books and fairy toys at the stores this year. I understand that Disney has a series of fairy stories and a movie based on Tinkerbelle coming out. I think that is very cool. We could all use a little fairy dust once in a while.

Neosporin

As a kid, when we got cuts and scrapes, my mom would doctor us up with a squirt of Neosporin and a bandaid. I have always thought that Neosporin was an elixir of healing.

Turns out that there is a difference between the Neosporin creme and the ointment. It’s not just the color and texture of the stuff that squeezes out the tube. The ointment has an extra ingredient in it that the creme does not have.

That is the critical difference for what you can use on pets. My vet says that it is OK to put the creme Neosporin on my dog for minor injuries. Even if he licks it off it won’t hurt him to ingest the creme. But the ointment is not good for dogs.

So maybe this tip will be handy for you sometime in the future.

Chicken and Dumplings

One of my favorite comfort foods is chicken and dumplings. I have tried several different recipes for it. Some of the local restaurants have good versions. But the one I make at home with Bisquick is the best.
