Memorial Day Parade and Recognition

  • Posted on May 27, 2013 at 9:57 am

Early this morning we went to watch the Memorial Day parade that was held in a city not far from here. Later today there is going to be a dinner held for the veterans and there will also be recognition of the men and women who served our country.

My father in law doesn’t know it, but he is going to receive some awards and I know he is going to be very surprised. He belongs to an organization called the 40 and 8th, and also served in the war years ago. He was in the Navy.

Sadly my mother in law is no longer alive to see her husband receive the awards he is being given or the recognition he is going to receive for serving our country. I know though she is looking down on us all and is going to be proud!

An amazing fireworks display

Last night I was sitting near a window that faces my back yard, and though I heard some “booming” sounds I didn’t pay much attention to them at the time. Then the young pit we rescued went sort of bonkers. He got terribly scared and needed to be calmed down, because the neighbors on the corner of our road were celebrating something at their home, and started a very long fireworks display.

The way the neighbors had positioned the “show” was so it would go out over three of our back yards, which isn’t a problem as they were being shot up very high into the air. I have to admit, this firework display looked like a professionals were in charge. Complete with music.

I watched the finale and it was beautiful. Unfortunately I found out the new pup is terrified of the fireworks. Around here, people start the 4th of July as soon it is warm enough to go outside with out being bundled up. I think it’s going to be a long summer!

Easter Bunny Blues

Even though the kids and grands are nearly grown and sure don’t believe in the Easter Bunny anymore, I usually still fill baskets, hang a carrot (which in the middle of the night, I take big bunny size bites out of) to make it look like the Easter Bunny was there and loved his carrot snack. Heck, I even put a board down and sprinkled flour on it, then made bunny tracks in the past.

This year, with my daughter away and my son’s off doing their own thing, it makes it kind of sad in a way to me, to think of my kids all grown and no sign of any more little ones around the house again. Tomorrow, though I will go to Sunday Mass, will just be another day here. I tried to get the family together, but all had various other plans. Plus Spring Break starts and the guys have the next week filled up with their own agendas.

I thought about cooking a dinner in case anyone happened to be home, but for the first time in 35 years, I’ve decided not to go all out like I used to. I’m kind of sad that the family won’t be together and that the grands don’t get into the Easter Bunny stuff, but I’ll survive it. Next year I just may take my own Spring Break vacation.

Three weddings and not enough me

  • Posted on March 11, 2013 at 3:24 pm

Last week I got wedding invitations from a dear friend Lisa, and two of my nieces on both sides of the family. Now this wouldn’t be bad even though I really don’t get into weddings, showers and all, but the three weddings are on the same day with two of them at nearly the same time. In all honesty, I have no idea what in the heck I’m going to do.

My friend’s wedding is in the evening, but one of my niece’s is also. The other nieces is in the mid afternoon, but it is a two hour drive one way. I know Lisa would understand but actually her’s is the only wedding I want to go to. I’m not close to my nieces as I was when they were young and I hardly ever see or talk to them, unless they show up at a family get together, which they seldom do. Lisa would understand if I couldn’t make it but my sister and brother wouldn’t like it at all if I was a no show.

I have a feeling that I’m going to put money in the nieces envelopes along with a really nice card. I’ll go to Lisa’s reception and perhaps hope for the best with the family and their attitudes. On a positive note…my mom doesn’t want to go to the weddings and isn’t really expected to show at my one nieces as she isn’t really a blood grand daughter and the girl has never really tried to get involved with the family. I’ll no doubt be ranting and raving about this for a few months, so bear with me as I grumble.

Happy Valentines Day With My Kids

  • Posted on February 14, 2013 at 8:29 pm

Every year I get my kids a bag of their favorite candy and a card for Valentines Day that reminds me of each on of them and says exactly what I tell them all the time, only in card form for this day. It’s sort of a tradition, since we really think every day should be Valentines Day for the ones we love. Still, I hope you all have had a nice day with loved ones!
