Safty and peace of mind

I hardly ever go out into my husbands garage. That is his domain. Actually, I think that is where his hoarding tendencies start coming out. He is a certified Harley Davidson mechanic and has literally thousands of parts, but after I went into that garage, I decided that he needs flammable cabinets. It scared me when I was out rummaging around for a simple screw driver, and some clay pots I thought I had out there, to see that there are some flammable cans ans items like that, that really should be put into flammable lockers so that there won’t be a fire.

We have kids and grand kids also, who have their dirt bikes, mini bikes and bicycles in the garage, and I believe that flammable cabinet storage is the safest way to keep the items that could catch on fire, or that are even hazardous out of reach if there isn’t adult supervision in the garage. There have been some break in’s in the neighbor hood, especially in people’s garages, and it would be very easy for who ever is doing this, to start a fire to “cover their tracks” and that too scares me.

I know I would feel a lot safer and not have to worry about flammable items and also fires, if these were all locked up. Also, with protection like this, and storage, it might make the garage neater.

Irene’s wrath

My prayers are going out to everyone and their family’s who were in the path of this hurricane. The destruction was and still is, very scary. We are getting some left over rain, but living where we do, we are fortunate.

Helping with germs

When the public restroom hand dryers first came out and were installed, I honestly didn’t know what they were or how to use them. Indeed it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out, but I’m one of those kinds of people who are baffled and a little freaked out at times with modern and tech stuff. I remember the first time I used air hand dryers, my daughter had to turn it on for me, then laughed so hard at my reaction, that lets just say, I’m glad we were in a restroom. On top of that, then I got my hands wet again…well…a few times, to keep using one. To me, it actually was amazing after I got used to the idea!

I now am a fan of restroom hand dryers, because of the germs that can be contracted using the paper towels in restrooms, not to mention the fact that we also touch toilet paper rolls holders and well, I’m sure other people think of these kinds of things also, and lots more.

What I think would be really cool, would be to have one of these ( pardon the pun) handy items in my own bathroom. I think of the money I would save in not only paper towels, but the germs I’d cut down on when one of us had a cold or flu. Just a thought.

Using rainwater

For as long as I can remember, going out to my grandma’s farm was a super big time treat. Besides have an awesome time there, we spent special times with my Papa. His “job” was to wash my hair, which was really long, and he would get a bucket of rain water from the rain barrel outside and we on warm days I’d get my hair washed outside in the yard. To me, this was our special time together, besides when he would let me work in his workshop with him or he would take me fishing with him…just the two of us.

The rain my grandparents collected in rain barrels had more uses than just hair washing. There were a few by the barn that we used to water the three steer, and pigs, numerous barn cats and the two farm dogs also. Oh, there were hoses of course, but why waste the rain water when we could use it for good purposes? My Nana swore on rain water for her roses and her house plants, especially her famous African violets. Rain harvesting was a big deal then and to me it’s a must do now. I guess it carried over to me and now even to my oldest daughter, when she realized how soft rain water makes her hair feel.

Now of course the barrels have been updated but I have a few and I look for rain barrels on sale so I can keep on using rain water and I’m even have gotten my grand daughter into using “our” rain water. She herself, loves to play in the water and says it makes her skin feel silky. Who am I go argue with her, since when it rains I love to play in it even in a torrential downpour!! I think everyone should rain harvest. It indeed cuts down on the water bill, at least for us!

Little pests

Something is eating holes in my hyacinth bean vines. I have wee little holes all over the leaves and they look terrible. I just can’t see what is making a meal out of them. The vines had looked so beautiful, there for awhile. Tomorrow I’m going to try spraying them with diluted dish soap and see if that stops those little bugs or what ever is munching on my leaves. I have heard that sometimes works to deter pesky bugs from doing this. It’s worth a try.
