Gosh, this looks good. Its been ages since I toasted marshmallows over an open fire. I’d love to do that this weekend.

No Room for Dessert

Most of the time when I eat at a restaurant, the portion sizes are so large that I cannot possibly eat the entire dinner. Some restaurants also love to fill you up with fresh baked dinner rolls or breadsticks, plus a salad. After I’ve plowed my way through all of that, there is never any room left for dessert. I miss having desserts with a cup of coffee and interesting conversation. that’s half the fun of being an adult.

Seedless Watermelons

Watermelons are grown by planting seeds in a sandy soil and giving them plenty of water. So how does one get a seedless watermelon? It seems that it would be physically impossible to have a watermelon with out seeds for more than one generation. With no seeds to reproduce, how do they get the next year’s crop? I don;t understand.

Ice Tea

At the grocery store today I noticed a new beverage in the refrigerated case section. After the milk cartoons are the juice cartons and then they have some specialty beverages. What I found was a new line of iced tea, by the “Gold Peak” brand. They have regular sweet, unsweet, sweet with lemon, and then diet. So I bought a couple of them and gave them a try at home. I have to admit – they are very good! I will definitely buy this again.

Spooky Treats

As parents, we are supposed to bake and take 2 dozen cookies or other treats for the children’s class party on Thursday. I’ve been scouring the internet for Halloween cookie recipes, and just can’t find much of interest.

The best that I came across so far are these meringue ghosts. They are probably very easy to make and after you stick a couple of eyes and maybe even a mouth on them, you have some really cute ghosts.

Chicken and Dumplings

One of my favorite comfort foods is chicken and dumplings. I have tried several different recipes for it. Some of the local restaurants have good versions. But the one I make at home with Bisquick is the best.

Labor Day Grill Out

We are grilling today. This is a big deal for us. Most of the time I just cook on the stove top or in the oven. So to put meat on the grill and stand there while it cooks to make sure it does not catch on fire or burn will be a challenge. I hope it does not rain on us. That would make our grill out not very pleasant and not practical for this holiday weekend. If we get rained out today, at least we have tomorrow for a second chance.

Bananas

Today I saw a commercial for Chiquita bananas. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a commercial for bananas before! It was such a surprise to see a banana commercial that I don’t even remember what they were saying except that Chiquita bananas are shipped quickly so that we get the freshest bananas. And at the end they were advertising a new Chiquita product, fresh pineapple spears packaged individually for a healthy fresh snack.

Poland or Russia?

There is an ongoing dispute between Poland and Russia as to which country was the first to invent vodka. There is also a competition between them for the best vodka.

My vote goes to Poland for their Sobieski. Do you have a favorite?

What’s Old is New Again

At the gas station this morning I saw a display of “new” Pepsi cans. The unusual thing is that the “new” is because it is old. The new flavor is called “throwback” because they are using the old fashioned recipe that used real sugar instead of corn syrup.

So I bought a can to try it out – it is really good!
