This coming week, my daughter will be going to the old folks homes, as she calls them, to Christmas carol with her choir. I’m thinking about getting together small plates of cookies or little “bundles” of them for her and the girls to give out also. It would be nice to share them.

Thanksgiving isn’t going to be a big deal like it has been every other year and it makes me rather sad. I love the preparing and cooking for two days to have it all over with in about 45 min. tops, even though I used to complain about it a bit. My kids are growing up and it’s hit me full force. The oldest will be going to her husband’s family’s. My oldest son is going up North with his best buddy and my youngest son is going to his girlfriend’s aunt’s house. That leaves my youngest daughter, my husband and myself, since my mom will be going to my sisters. It’s too far for us to drive there unless we rented a hotel. So, I’m wondering if I should even cook this year.

To me, Thanksgiving is special. It’s not about the food, since I cook for three days and it’s all over in 32 minutes…yes, once I did indeed time it. Thanksgiving is a day that I can think back while my family is at the table and remember all of the things I have to be thankful for, despite of the rough times. This year, like last year, my youngest daughter will be saying the Thanksgiving prayer, and it means a lot to me. So, I’m doing my shopping and planning, but also remembering the little things I’m thankful for, while I’m getting my supplies.

I’m going to peel and squish the last of the squash I grew in the garden to make some bread. Of course, I’ll also save some of them just to eat, also. Squash is one of my food basics all year round. In the winter and spring it’s rather expensive, but my since my mom had turned me on to all kinds of various types, of squash since I was young and even still is doing this, I LOVE any variety and there are so many recipes and ways to cook it! Heck, I have even eaten raw squash and it was awesome! Just add salt and wella! I just wish I could remember which kind it was that she got me to try the last time I went home. I have saved the seeds from the different kinds of quash I’ve bought, or grown, so in the spring I plan on having a squash garden. I’ve discovered not to buy any that have been refrigerated and not to refrigerate anything fresh if I want to try and grow the food. The seeds won’t take. I remembered the name… it’s delacota squash. Not sure it that is spelled right, though. At least that is how it is pronounced. Eccelent!

My friend Larry stopped by last night. I couldn’t figure out why he had backed up to my front porch, until he began hauling out corn stalks, pumpkins, various squash and gourds, and even baling twine. All this bounty was to get me into the mood to start decorating the porch for Halloween! It was so sweet of him to do this. I haven’t really been in the spirit of it all, like I used to be, and him bringing all of this over has gotten me now wanting to decorate. Tomorrow night I’ll take supper down to him as a thank you.

I remember years ago when I was young, my oldest friend’s mom used to make homemade pizza and it was awesome. I’ve never made it before, but with the help of my youngest daughter, we gave it a try. I have to admit, it turned out wonderfully. Of course to be honest, it cost more to make from scratch than it would have to order one, but it was well worth it, and the kids loved it also. I should have made two, since before I could blink it was all gone. I did however get a tiny slice.
