Generally I’m not really afraid of storms, but this one that is supposed to hit from the NW, is starting to look a bit scary. It’s really dark and there is a change of tornadoes. Course, around these parts there is always a chance of these. I’ve got all my little survival things gathered as a just in case and bought lamp oil and extra wicks for my lamps. I’ve got and always have lots of candles, and I want to thank my Mom for the gas stove she gave me. If the power goes out, at least I can cook, so that is helpful. I have to get a hold of a good roofer, since yesterday I noticed that there were some shingles off of the roof. We don’t need a leaking roof and ceiling, so I’m calling in the pros. This weather is so strange. Even though the sun keeps trying to shine, the weather people are insisting that we are going to get hit with a big one. Sometimes I wonder what the television forecasters actually do know about the weather or if they just are guessing.

Remembering traditions in the school I went to until the 8th grade, May Day was one of my favorite. It seems like the whole school was involved in celebrating the first of May. We got new summer dresses and shoes, because back then the weather was usually nice and warm and sunny. Each class would make a May Pole, and decorate it with ribbons and flowers. There were prizes for the best looking May Pole, but it seemed that Nuns at our small school not only gave prizes to the first, second and third place winners, but also prizes to those who had not won. Either way it was a great project to do and it was fun to see everyone having a cheerful time and participating in the first day of May celebration. When my kids were little we had our traditions and the the May Pole was a family ordeal. Even my husband got involved and we used the tether ball pole to anchor ribbons and flowers to it. We made wreaths of flowers to wear on our heads and always danced and sang and laughed until the kids got tired of the game.

Recently a friend of mine gave me two titanium bracelets to choose from and the one I chose is beautiful. I have gotten so many compliments on the piece, that I am thinking about getting my daughter one also. Of course, she isn’t a bracelet lover like I am, but she did like the style of the one I received and since her birthday is coming up, it definitely would be something she won’t be expecting and will be surprised with me buying for her. Because of my allergy to most metals, at first I was rather leery of buying any ring or wearing any jewelery made from titanium. Until my oldest son worked as an apprentice for a high class tattoo/jewelry shop, I never knew jewelery was even made out of titanium. I guess I lead a sheltered life or something similar. Or perhaps I just really never looked into it. He knows I am very picky about what I wear and brought me home a couple black titanium rings that I could try out, just to find out if my finger would turn green, or break out and itch, like any metal besides sterling or gold would, and if it would be compatible with my skin. I liked the ring and there was no reaction to it. The inlaid titanium rings I found were really beautiful, and indeed my style. I was excited when I received it after shopping for it. Once again I have gotten a great deal of compliments on this piece also. They are pricey, but I think every lady deserves to buy a gift for herself once in awhile.

My daughter has the chance to go to night school for two days a week during the summer for credit that will help her with collage. She is deciding to take it the opportunity to do so. This is the first time the high school has offered this. I respect her in her choice, but also have my reservations. There are some things I’m not sure that she has considered, though I’ve gently brought the subject up to her. She has been going to after school class the last two semesters, for the credit she didn’t get for passing Phys Ed. Even though she had a total support from a doctor and a specialist to be excused from gym class, due to a back injury, it wasn’t accepted by the school, as gym was a prerequisite for seniors. To me, this is not right. I brought it up during a meeting with the superintendent and also those I needed to “take it up with,” as I was told. Nothing was accomplished. I told my daughter to consider the fact that she not only had day and night classes all this time, and also extra credit work she asked for during all the holidays and Spring Break, she didn’t get much rest and relaxation. Of course this didn’t change her mind. She is set on what she is going to do, so I’m just going to be there to support her, and help her anyway I can. I am proud of her, for knowing exactly what she wants.

A bunch of my friends know that when I go out of state for garage sales, and auctions, then rent self storage units so I can store them, until I can get the man power and time to go back and get my treasures. I even wrote about some of the places I go to in my blog recently, since it is garage sale time. My friend Destiny is using Trenton self storage units, and actually said she copied what I do. She and her mother are really into going to sales and auctions. I visited my friend Cheryl who lives Chicago. We spent the weekend going to garage sales. She has used Chicago storage units for years. When she moved from Michigan to where she is living now, her parents had put their house up for sale, and they gave her and her daughter a whole lot of furniture. Most were big and some were antiques. Cheryl’s daughter moved to Maryland, and Cheryl called her to tell her to come to Chicago to help her move the furniture stored. They HAD to use a Baltimore storage unit, since that is where their really big truck decided to stop running. They made a tough situation a positive one. Knowing their things were safely stored, they rented a car and a hotel room and made the whole thing into a mother and daughter adventure.

Because my son in law has a job that takes him basically all over, he has storage units in quite a few states. He now needs some storage units in Florida and called my daughter to tell her about some Tampa self storage units he is planning to rent for his personal tools and items he will need for his business while there, doing some of the jobs he has lined up. Since he has his workers spread out all over the US, he has to rent units in various states for the tools and also the equipment they need. He even has units for the heavy equipment, which I didn’t even know units that big existed. My daughter told me he had his Texas crew just rent some Houston storage since they will be starting some big jobs, building two HUGH apartment complexes and it should take them most of the summer. I personally rented some Orlando storage a year or so ago, while I was in that area. I do a lot of flea market shopping, as well as garage sales and barn sales. Every now and then I will go to antique shops and find great deals at most all of them there. It’s much better shopping down in Florida, because of the weather and the fact that there are much more sales to be had. Here we have to wait for Spring and Summer, and it makes me antsy waiting that long. The storage units are great to have, and also affordable, until I can have my boys go down with our big truck and load, then haul my treasures back home for me! It also saves my son in law lots of money, since his units are insured.

Writing the line that Dorthy said to Toto about not being in Kansas, isn’t exactly accurate, thank goodness, but the winds today were close to that of typical March winds we have around here…only at the end of the month. A little while ago, I went out after the winds calmed a bit, and picked up a garbage bag full of trash that had flown into my yard. Along with the the paper trash from other peoples yards and such, were the kazillion leaves that had never been raked from yards all around, a garbage bin, (haven’t found the owner of that yet) a bouncie ball, and a porch chair, which wasn’t all that heavy, but still a wonderment about how strong exactly what this wind today. I’m sure despite the fact that the wind has let up a bit, I’ll still be finding things laying about tomorrow. Hopefully I can also find the own of the trash barrel and the bouncie ball, I’ll just sit out by the road and I’m sure the owner will find it, if it was important.

Something has gotten into my youngest daughter, who is now 18. She knows that I am and have been preparing for a big procedure on my neck, in a month and all out of the clear blue about a month ago, she started cleaning the house. Even things that didn’t have to be cleaned. She would help me anyway, I know…but to see her do all of this has made me realize just how much she has grown and matured over the last year. My baby girl is growing up, and it’s bittersweet in a way. I am trying to help with what I can, but I have limitations that I am not used to, and she actually has to remind me that I’m not “allowed” to do this or that, and to rest. In general she is my mother hen. She has always been helpful if she saw I needed it, but I think now it is more maturity than allowance. Of course, allowance helps. She is saving for collage, and her vehicle that needs some work to be reliable enough to go back and forth. Spring cleaning is now her part time job, and she does it very well.

Guest written by our friend Mason Abbott Okay. Am I the only one who was totally and utterly confused by that insane lecture today? I swear, I read ahead, took good notes, have a pretty good understanding of what we’ve learned so far, and yet, the professor was talking Greek to me. I looked around the room, and I couldn’t tell if other people knew what he was talking about or not. No one was saying much, and everyone was writing notes frantically, so I’m guessing you may have been a bit confused too. I just wanted to pass along some helpful information I discovered while trying to make sense of the lecture when I was studying tonight. If you are like me, and were totally lost in class today, click here and I think you will find some of the keywords he used in class today, explained a little bit more clearly. If I am the only one who was not understanding a word of his lecture and the vocabulary he used, then please just disregard this. Just trying to help y’all out.

For two months or actually longer, I have been watching the Decorah Eagles on USTREAM Live. The Eagles are totally awesome to watch. Three eggs were laid. The first was on February 17. It was a big event in our family. As of Monday, the first chick hatched, and one hatched this morning. One more to go, which according to my calculations should be either tomorrow or early Friday. First, my husband came home from work one morning around the 1st of Feb. to tell me that a co worker had been watching these eagles and I should find the link and watch also. I started and my family thought I was a bit over involved in the whole thing. I couldn’t help myself. To me, this is so incredible, to be able to watch these magnificent birds up close. I have in the past had the privilege to come with in petting distance of a bald eagle a few years ago, while I was taking a road cruise near the end of our road where it turns to dirt. She flew over my truck and when I stopped and got out, she landed about two feet from where I was standing. At first I thought she was hurt, but nope…when I reached out, (yes, stupid thing to do, but I was in a “moment”) she took off and her wing actually brushed my head! She kept coming back, so I just leaned against my truck and watched. I also talked to her really calmly. When you see that beak and the talons of an eagle that big, you realize the pure power and strength of these birds. It is awesome in ever sense of the work. Since then, I have seen the male and also walked back far enough onto property with trees and a collapsed house and barn. There is a nest back there, and I’ve kept this a secret sort of, and NEVER let out the exact location. EVER. Unfortunately there are poachers in this area, and they don’t care what they “hunt.”
