Learning business in a resturant

  • Posted on September 4, 2011 at 7:20 pm

My daughter and I went out to lunch the other day in a very popular business type people restaurant. This is the kind of place that serves great lunches and brunches with high quality service, but at a fast pace, and though I like the restaurant, the tables are spaced rather close together, so it’s darn near impossible not to hear the conversation going on at the next table with other the other  patrons. Try as we could, after the word fulfillment was mentioned, my daughter and I looked at one another with an amused look on our faces and sort of “tuned in” just a touch. These were every day men who looked like they had worked hard for what they earned, but were intelligent in speech, and business savvy.

My ears indeed picked up when I heard product fulfillment, as business for me has been slow since my stroke and I thought maybe I could pick a tidbit of helpful information up from these gentlemen. I did however make it known that I was somewhat interested in what they where talking about, but also I know that they knew I was way over my head in this, and yet I wasn’t embarrassed to have them know that we had been eaves dropping, but couldn’t help but over hear the conversation, since the tables were a mere foot apart from one another.

Order fulfillment was interesting enough to make both my daughter and I start to wanting to one day soon start doing more research. I wish we could have stayed longer to hear more, but lack of time stopped us.

For the future

It’s really strange. Ever since I got ill, (but believe me, I am still kicking) everyone keeps telling me to get my investments in order. I admit that  I’ve been really lax about it all. I don’t feel old, though I’m getting there, and to me right now, it’s a hassle that I actually know has to be done. Not only for me, but the family. They have not a clue of what my plans for retirement are, but some friends do, and one of them suggested that I get a do it yourself portfolio management. I know I need to do something, and if I had some kind of guidelines, I know it would help a lot. Especially now that I need to prepare for the future, as to be honest, I’m a touch scared that if something happened to me, no one would know what assets I have, as I am bad at managing things by myself, I have to admit.

The way I figure it, if I were to get something like an online portfolio manager, basically things could be taken care of, especially the stuff that I have no clue as what to do with. Lets face it, despite of my investments, I know I have to do something to know what is going on with them. My one aunt is on me all the time about this issue. She knows I’m on the computer for a great deal of time and even suggested online portfolio balancing manager. That would no doubt be good for me.

I’m going to do some research and find out if I can do what was suggested to me. We’ll see what happens. In any case I know I have to prepare for retirement and the fact that indeed I need some help with these kinds of issues.

Handy space saver

With the kids all once again home and since all over them and myself have laptops, notebooks and desk top computers, we are running out of space, not to mention there are just too many cords, and even power strips around this house. Of course are home is wired for all of these correctly, but it is getting out of hand. This is where the handy idea of a laptop cart came in.

At first I thought that the laptop carts would basically be just primarily for offices or businesses perhaps. After I read the information an looked at various styles and models, the idea kept pecking away in my head that this might be a perfect space saving idea for our home. It seems to me that as the kids grew, the house got bigger. It’s either that or we collected more things, and as I had and have been looking around the rooms trying to figure out what to get rid of, what to put in the attic and how to organize some of the clutter that has accumulated, I actually sort of had a panic attack. I didn’t think it had gotten so out of hand, actually.

The laptop storage seems like the perfect solution to at leas one of the clutter problems. Some I looked at even have a power source right on the cart so there wouldn’t be wires hanging out all over the place. They are roomy and also don’t have to be limited to just holding the laptops. Other things pertaining to office or computers items, can be stored in these also. So, perhaps my house is on it’s way to being less cluttered?

Internet out in the country

My partner and my farm is out in the middle of basically no where. Actually I can’t say no where, as it is indeed smack in the middle of farm country, as we call it here. 400 acres of land, that wheat, hay, beans corn, straw and various fruit trees, raspberries, grapes, rhubarb, squash and other great eatables are  raised. There is also a very large woodland that supplies the farm with fuel for the wood burning stoves, and other people with wood for their stoves and fire places. We have steer, hogs, goats and a variety of other animals also. What we don’t have, is cable internet service. Until recently we didn’t even have dial-up internet. This posed a problem for the most part. For me, who is a computer freak, it was more than a problem when I would be out there writing stories.

Finally we started checking into cheap dial up service for the farm. We really didn’t want anything very pricey as both my partner and I already had cable service at our respective homes, but figured it was time to upgrade somewhat for business purposes and to keep our records out there at the farm, instead of bringing loads of work home with us.

I was really glad when my partner decided on dsl service, since it’s really speedy, there is 100% satisfaction guaranteed, it is available in our “neck of the woods” and also is very, very handy to have. In all honesty, I was no doubt more excited than he was to buy a brand new computer, and have our service all hooked up. It felt like Christmas in the summer!! Now I can do the work at the farm, instead of taking the time away from my family when I come home. It’s great to have this extra spare time also!

A chair makes a difference.

I bought a new computer/desk chair today. It’s amazing the difference it makes on my back. I sit up much straighter and it’s actually comfortable on my neck. I didn’t think I’d like it, but when my boys put it together for me and I started to type, it indeed helps my posture and also my arms. In the next few weeks I’ll break it in more and then see what it really feels like. For now, I’m happy with it. We’ll see how long it lasts.
