Filling the pool

  • Posted on May 28, 2013 at 10:06 am

The task of cleaning out and then filling the pool is rather daunting to me. We only have cold water coming from the outside faucet, and for me to get into the water when its cold like it is will not even be pleasant. I have even thought about hiring a pool company to come open, clean and fill the pool for me, but it’s sens less to waste that kind of money, just because I don’t like getting cold.

Of course in the coming months, I’ll be glad I did all the chores it takes to get the pool clean and filled with fresh water, but it’s the procedure of this I’d love to forgo.

Today I go get all the chemicals I need for the summer to keep the pool clean, and I’m thinking about getting new deck furniture also. We need more comfy chairs and I’ve seen a few stores have some great deals on various lawn and patio furniture. It will be nice to have more places for people to sit when they come to visit and swim.

Shopping for the gardens

Today, since the sun is shining and the weather is supposed to be warm this weekend, which I will believe when I feel it, I’ve decided to visit the local garden centers and see what goodies I can find, and also shop for the items on my list that I’ve been compiling all winter in preparation for my gardens.

I’d also like to get some lawn and porch furniture, the chairs and such I have now are worn and I want a fresh new look.

I know of a few stores that have some great sales so perhaps I can also save some money to sink into new garden tools and also some planters I’ve been wanting to buy. I’ve got to replace some of the old bricks in the courtyard and also get some more seeds and top soil. I have a feeling this is going to be an expensive shopping trip, but I’ve saved all winter for this and nothing is going to deter me!

Snow in April

While taking the dogs out this morning I stopped short at the back door and realized that it had snowed over night. Not just a little dusting either. The white stuff covered the ground and despite the sun shining, it was so cold outside that it felt like winter all over again.

Snow in April, only in Michigan. This is so crazy and it feels like it’s never going to get warm. Of course, I had to put on boots and a heavy coat, while my poor dogs were waiting (with legs crossed) to go outside and do their business. They were patient and ignored my string of not good words said with disgust of the snow and cold.

My iris, daffodils and other spring plants were bending with the snow and I felt so sorry for the fat little robins that had arrived shivering with the cold. Okay, I didn’t see the robins shivering, but I was so everyone had to be cold. It’s the rule here. Mom is cold, everyone is.

Seeds and more seeds

Yesterday my mom and I went seed shopping and I have to admit she went over board on the zinnia seeds. I don’t have a clue where I’m going to plant all these seeds, but we did get some unique varieties of them.

Her garden plots are not very big and I tend them for her when I go there on the weekends, since she can’t do the bending and lifting like she used to. She always says to just “scatter, scatter the seeds”…no kind of planning to it. Me on the other hand like my flowers to grow according to height so the little short ones can be seen.

All in all I do believe she and I bought at least 40 packets of various flower seeds. Next week I’ll get my veggie seeds for my garden here at home. I’ll start some of them inside so they will be ready to plop in the ground after Mother’s Day. We got great deals on the seeds that we did buy so at least we saved some money for other garden pretties!!

Taking a short vacation

This weekend is my nieces bridal shower, and I must admit I would rather just send money and not go. I’ve never been into showers of any kind, and since I’m actually expected to go, I think I’m going to hit Ohio thinking of it as a mini vacation.

There is an art museum exhibit going on that I’d like to see, and I have passes to a hotel room with all the perks. (thanks to a good friend of mine who couldn’t use them).

If the weather is nice I’d like to go to the new farmer’s market in the part of Ohio I will be in. I always love going to the first farmers markets there, because they have all different kinds of seeds and plants to grow once I take them home.
