During college I took 4 years of Spanish. For one I needed to take a foreign language in order to graduate, but I also wanted to do some traveling to South America. At the time I didn’t realize how important learning a second language would become.
At work I meet new people everyday. Some of which only speak Spanish. Knowing the basics has helped me get through many consultations. I don’t speak Spanish fluently anymore, but I can still understand it. I have close friends from Guatemala and they tell me that it’s difficult to learn another language unless you live in that country where it is the primary language. It makes me feel better to hear this and I have found it to be true. After I graduated from college I spent some time in Puerto Rico. At that time my Spanish was fluent. I could talk to people on the island and understand everything they were saying back to me. I hope to return again to Puerto Rico and relearn what I have lost in these past few years.
