The arrival of spring tomorrow

  • Posted on March 19, 2013 at 5:23 pm

Yesterday as I was looking at the receding water in the back yard, and in my mind mapping out where my next garden idea was going to be started, I saw some birds digging for worms in the semi mushy lawn. All of a sudden, a few robin hopped by the door. These are the first robin I’ve seen this year, and they were a welcome sight.

Now, I may be the only person I know who thinks like this, except perhaps my quirky friend Lindsay, but I swear that birds have a line of communication that tells one another where the good chubby worms are. Within about ten minutes of seeing three robin, a bunch came. It was an awesome sight to see, for sure.

I’m not going to get too excited yet though because yes, tomorrow is indeed the first day of Spring, but up here that doesn’t mean too much, considering our strange weather. We’ve had snow in the middle of April. But still, seeing the robin out back and now hopping all over the front yard, it does cheer one up, and also sort of breaks the cabin fevers in a way, with hope that the warm weather is coming soon.

Bathroom sink leak

It looks like I’m going to have to call in a plumber, or at least a friend who knows about these kinds of issues. I woke up last night and went into the bathroom because I heard water trickling. Thinking the handle wasn’t all the way up on the toilet, which sometimes happens, I walked in and darn near slipped because of all the water on the floor.

We’ve changed the pipes under the sink about a year ago, but apparently they were not sealed the right way. I’m not happy. I’m not sure how long the water was leaking out, but under the sink is all soggy, which may mean I’ll also have to once again replace the vanity.

I realize these things happen in a really old home, but it seems things are falling apart or breaking all at once, which is costly and a pain in the butt too. Especially with winter coming on and needed the extra money for winter essentials. A plumber is not cheap and so first I’m going to scout out a few guy friends who know what they are doing, home improvement wise. Maybe I can barter, which is always fun to do.

Dallas roofing companies

Last night my friend Amy called to tell me more about her home improvement endeavors. She let me know in her Texas drawl, that she had heard of the best Dallas roofing company and how she was planning on checking them out to get an estimate for repair on her roof. From what she said, a storm went through her area and now she would need some major repair.

I love to hear about all of her home improvements. It gives me incentive for mine own and I’ve been seriously thinking about hiring a roofing company to put a new roof on my side porch, but I know that if I do that, I’ll want it all to match. Maybe I’ll get an estimate first and then see if I can afford it.

In the mean time, I’m sure that soon I’ll be hearing about my friends experience hiring a roofing company. She also emails photos to me, so I’ll get to see the finished roof. I’m sure it will give her peace of mind after she has her roof repaired.

Homes for sale

  • Posted on June 18, 2012 at 11:42 pm

On my road alone, there are 6 homes for sale. It seems strange that most of our old neighbors have either passed on, or have moved. It’s not the same neighborhood anymore.

My dear friend Lucille, who lived next door is now in a nursing home. It’s sad to me. I love that lady so much, but her family decided to move her into the home, after she fell. Now when I see her, she doesn’t know me most of the time. Her home is up for sale now, and I have to admit that I’m worried about who may buy it and move in. It’s a small home on an acre or more of land, and yet the home is selling very cheap.

Another home across the road is for sale also, but it is a HUD home, and once again, I’m concerned who may buy it and move in. Over the last few years, it’s sad to say, but the people who have been moving into our small town are down right scary at times. Lots of “party people” too. I realize that nothing stays the same, but I miss the way the town was when we first moved in. Everyone knew one another and helped one another also. It was a great community and place to raise the kids. Now, I’m not so sure. It doesn’t help with peace of mind.

Using travel agents to visit Kenya

  • Posted on May 15, 2012 at 9:39 am

Lately, I’ve been talking to Kenya travel agents to find out more of the place I may go to visit. I’d really love to go, as my dear friend Kirsty lives near there, and she has given me an open invitation to come to Africa whenever it is possible for me to get away for a week. I think it would be totally awesome to go to visit, and perhaps go on a safari tour, or just go to the little shops and see what kind of pretty and unique things I can find while shopping.

My friend and I met online 14 years ago, in a group that basically showed other members where we lived, and our lifestyles. It has since changed and we no longer have that group online. After Kirsty and I “met” in the group, she and a few other members decided to come visit me in my farm life community, since most of the ladies (there were 6) were basically city people.

Kirsty told me about her homeland and showed me recent photos of her new home. Her surroundings are beautiful. She also mentioned looking on the internet for Kenya travel agents who could set up tours, shopping sprees, and accommodations during my visit. I think that would be the way to do things, so I can make the most of my vacation, and see and do what I really want to do. Going to visit another Country and being out of my own Country is strange to me, but also exciting and fun.
