Carrying on the fly fishing tradition

  • Posted on September 28, 2012 at 2:55 pm

When I was small, my Papa would take me out fly fishing with him. It is one of my fondest memories and also one of the most happy times of my life, though I’m thankful for other memories of my grandpa. My Papa would wake me up very early, before anyone else even thought about waking up, and we would grab our poles, lunch and some kind of roll or doughnut “to go” then be off to the rivers.

Had there been internet and my grandpa had known about TridentFlyFishing.com, I’m sure he would have looked at the equipment and the fly reels that they sell, along with so much more items for those who love to fly fish. I used to love looking at the various fly reels, and also the rods. Even his tackle box was like opening a jewel case, at least to me. It still is today. I used to take out all the lures and the magical little fluttery flies, that I knew would catch some great fish if we just had the patience and casting skills. Which I learned from the best! After my grandpa passed on, I was given all of his fishing items, and I use them as much as I can, along with my items that I have collected over the years.

Today while fly fishing, I take my grand daughter out with me. I have to say that she is getting to be quite a good little fly fisher woman. I have yet to find fly rods that are just the “right” for her, but with the help of the internet and great sites, I’m getting closer and am glad I still can go online and do some shopping on a whim, since everything is right there at my fingertips that I could need. I totally plan on carrying on the fly fishing tradition that my grandfather started with me!

Online help to find scholarships

  • Posted on May 24, 2012 at 3:35 pm

With two kids looking into various collages, their father and I have been trying to help them find active scholarships and grants. There are a lot out there, that are seldom known of, because they aren’t really common knowledge to people until they start really digging. I know that the kid’s school certainly didn’t tell us about any online help we could get as far as finding these scholarships, nor did they tell us that there were sites online that were free and very helpful for both students and parents.

I know that when I was preparing to go to collage, there were very few helpful people who could guide me through the process of getting a grant or a scholarship. There also was no internet. Without that kind of help, I ended up getting a grant that took me years and years to pay back, and the interest rate nearly bankrupted me. The grant also didn’t pay for what I needed the money for in the first place. Only a small portion was paid.

I don’t want the lack of knowledge stopping my kids from going to the school that they would benefit most from. I’m glad there are sources online who offer advice, guidance and other help with scholarships and grants.

Using travel agents to visit Kenya

  • Posted on May 15, 2012 at 9:39 am

Lately, I’ve been talking to Kenya travel agents to find out more of the place I may go to visit. I’d really love to go, as my dear friend Kirsty lives near there, and she has given me an open invitation to come to Africa whenever it is possible for me to get away for a week. I think it would be totally awesome to go to visit, and perhaps go on a safari tour, or just go to the little shops and see what kind of pretty and unique things I can find while shopping.

My friend and I met online 14 years ago, in a group that basically showed other members where we lived, and our lifestyles. It has since changed and we no longer have that group online. After Kirsty and I “met” in the group, she and a few other members decided to come visit me in my farm life community, since most of the ladies (there were 6) were basically city people.

Kirsty told me about her homeland and showed me recent photos of her new home. Her surroundings are beautiful. She also mentioned looking on the internet for Kenya travel agents who could set up tours, shopping sprees, and accommodations during my visit. I think that would be the way to do things, so I can make the most of my vacation, and see and do what I really want to do. Going to visit another Country and being out of my own Country is strange to me, but also exciting and fun.

The Decorah Eagles

  • Posted on March 28, 2012 at 12:47 pm

For two months or actually longer, I have been watching the Decorah Eagles on USTREAM Live. The Eagles are totally awesome to watch. Three eggs were laid. The first was on February 17. It was a big event in our family. As of Monday, the first chick hatched, and one hatched this morning. One more to go, which according to my calculations should be either tomorrow or early Friday.

First, my husband came home from work one morning around the 1st of Feb. to tell me that a co worker had been watching these eagles and I should find the link and watch also. I started and my family thought I was a bit over involved in the whole thing. I couldn’t help myself. To me, this is so incredible, to be able to watch these magnificent birds up close. I have in the past had the privilege to come with in petting distance of a bald eagle a few years ago, while I was taking a road cruise near the end of our road where it turns to dirt.  She flew over my truck and when I stopped and got out, she landed about two feet from where I was standing. At first I thought she was hurt, but nope…when I reached out, (yes, stupid thing to do, but I was in a “moment”) she took off and her wing actually brushed my head! She kept coming back, so I just leaned against my truck and watched. I also talked to her really calmly.

When you see that beak and the talons of an eagle that big, you realize the pure power and strength of these birds. It is awesome in ever sense of the work. Since then, I have seen the male and also walked back far enough onto property with trees and a collapsed house and barn. There is a nest back there, and I’ve kept this a secret sort of, and NEVER let out the exact location. EVER. Unfortunately there are poachers in this area, and they don’t care what they “hunt.”

Loving online cheesecake

  • Posted on March 23, 2012 at 6:33 pm

Now that I can Order Cheesecake Online, I’m pretty much in seventh heaven. It’s a comfort food for myself and my whole family. My friends and neighbors also. Sitting at my wooden kitchen table, I will eat a little slice, and it’s enough to bring back memories of needful and meaningful talks, of solving some problems and talking the others away. Memories of celebrating and of course there were on occasion the bad times and tears.

The first cheesecake I ever made, was in my Nana’s kitchen. It was my Papa though, who taught me how to make a perfect rich, but simple cheesecake.  Complete with the taste and texture of the first bite, being one of those cheesecakes that you will not forget. Cheesecake loves will know what I mean. There are quite a few variety’s I’ve had that have had that, ” Yep, this is keeper in my book.” I don’t know if I think it is so good because of the fact, Papa taught me how to use the ingredients and I am just partial. OR, it indeed is a great tasting cheesecake. It has worked it’s magic around a few kitchen tables though and never failed being there when needed, considering this is the only kind of cheese cake I will make. The rest I gladly buy. And there are great savings and deals also!

I love sending away for a cheesecake another person has made. It’s an art, making “the” cheesecake, as far as I am concerned. When I first found out I can get cheesecake just by staying home and surfing the net for them, I was in awe. I’ve got a bucket list, just of various types of cheesecake I want to try, and who sells them. It’s a long one!
