No April Fool Pranks

  • Posted on April 1, 2013 at 7:24 pm

I have survived nearly all day so far with no April Fool pranks pulled on me. By now, my family knows do NOT tell me things on this day that aren’t true, and don’t pull any pranks that jump start my heart.

I’ve always disliked April 1st because of this silly tradition of jokes, pranks and actual fibs. To me, it isn’t funny. Also since April is finally here I like to enjoy the fact that in one more month or so, I can start on the yard and gardens! It’s still too chilly for me to be outside, and with the whole family in various stages of colds, I can’t afford to catch one also. Yes, I know…they say colds are viruses. I don’t care. I think it comes from not wearing the proper attire when out in the cold.

I’ve ordered a whole lot of really very strange flower and veggie seeds this year. Just for the heck of it. I’m especially looking forward to the eatables that I have coming soon. It should be a good summer for redoing a lot of my beds with more new things!

Where did the summer go

It seems like only yesterday, I was spring house cleaning and getting my gardens ready to plant in. Now the leaves are changing, which I admit is a beautiful sight and only will get prettier in another few months. I most definitely didn’t like the drought, as grocery prices are already rising steadily, but I will miss the feel of (non burned) grass under my feet and the heat of the summer months.

I’ve gotten all the storm windows washed and ready to put away and also cleaned out a spot in the attic for the screens, so they don’t get bent during the winter.

We haven’t really winterized the pool as the boys still like to brave the chill of the air and jump in the pool now and then. I personally would freeze my butt off, but then again, I hate being cold and it’s the air that is chilly, not the water. This weekend, I need to get a new pool cover, IF I can find one to fit, as during one of our summer storms, the original one blew off and got hung up in the neighbors tree, which caused a few small tears. I could always duct tape the tears in a pinch, but since I need a new cover anyway, I may be able to find a great deal since it’s the end of summer.

Flea and Tick allert

  • Posted on June 10, 2012 at 11:24 am

A few years ago, we had an epidemic of fleas. It was terrible and there actually was nothing we could do about it. It was county wide and when I called Nancy, who is our vet, she told me the same thing. None of the flea dips or the repellant was working on the animals. She had told me it was the worst she had ever seen in this area. Our pets were miserable, and we even lost three new born kittens to the fleas.

This year, fleas and now ticks are back. We have a batch of kittens and I had heard that Dawn dish soap could be used on them if diluted. I tried it, and it seemed to help a lot, but since they are outside with their mother, I’m sure it won’t last long, and any type of store brand treatment is too strong for them, even though they are nearly weaned.

Ticks are a major problem this year also. With the high grass along the fields and also it being very dry so far this summer, we are constantly checking our dog, since he loves to run the whole yard that boarders the fields. So now we are on tick and flea alert. I love the summer, but the nasty bugs come out and it’s expensive trying to fight a loosing battle. This situation has even made the local news, yet with no real solutions on how to fix the problem. It sure isn’t helping to have peace of mind.

A quiet Memorial Day

Today was a really quiet day. Because of the partying people, we chose not to do any driving and I think that was one of the best decisions we could have made. There were a few accidents locally, but this year I didn’t hear of many major ones, which is wonderful.

I must admit that it was really hot today, and the thought of getting a new pool is very much becoming a good possibility. It would certainly been a plus today, as the temperature reached about 101 degrees by about 2:00 pm. I know the lake beaches around here would have been totally packed. Normally we would go to one of our favorite places, but hubby had to go to work tonight, so we didn’t make plans.

All of the kids except my youngest daughter had things that they had planned on doing for the day. My daughter wanted to just stay home and finish some make up work she needed to do for school. I have a feeling though, that she didn’t want to go out in the heat, like the boys did. I’m going to go look at various big pools tomorrow and price them. I heard there was a sale at the local pool supply, so that is the first place I’ll check out.

Out of school soon

I can’t believe that in a couple more weeks, the kids will be out of school for the summer holiday. I know for them that they time dragged on and on. For me however, it went by quickly. We don’t really have any plans for the summer, because I no doubt am going to have my neck fixed and have to heal, as soon as they are out of school and no pressing matters develop. Hopefully, there won’t be.

I’m sure the kids will all have lots of plans and things they would like to do with their friends, instead of with the family. I have though, considered getting a new pool. The last one we had wasn’t set up properly, and the HUGH storm we had last year, took it no doubt, back to Kansas. I have to laugh about it, as if I thought long enough, I would once again bring up memories of just what a powerful storm that was, and that the pool is the least of the things that could have been blown away.

A new pool would not only be great for the kid, but for me as well. I love to go out after everyone is asleep and swim by myself. It’s so peaceful and relaxing since we live pretty much in the country. The pool I am looking at, also would be lawn or home improvement, as I’d love to landscape around it.
